Skin, we all have it! It holds us together, helps regulate our temperature, protects us from the outside environment, supports our surface capillary and lymphatic system, which serves to help our body with excretion functions via perspiration and re-absorption of metabolic waste back into the bloodstream. In summary it’s a fundamental part of our physiological well-being and arguably our psychological well-being, when it comes to its outward appearance and how it represents us in our daily lives.
However, this isn’t a science lesson so we don’t need to get to bogged down in the complexities of these functions, rather we can look to someone to help guide and advise on how we can best care and support our skin to maintain its health and appearance and that’s my job!
Protecting your skin
To help our skin protect us effectively, we need to think about how we can care and support our skin to function most effectively, free from external aggressors, cellular damage and disease. For some parts of our body this can be relatively easy with the shield of clothing to help protect it from everyday elements, however our bare faces are there helping us into our daily lives both indoors and outside, day and night. Subsequently how we protect our skin from these elements is vitally important to slow ageing, protect us from developing skin ailments and give us skin, which is healthy and the best it can be.
So now I’m making this skincare thing sound really simple and it many ways it is, we just need to be consistent in protecting our skin, use the right products to support its natural protective functions and in the correct way for our skin type………and this is where it gets tricky!
Making good skincare choices
The Beauty industry is a multi-billion-pound industry and I love it! It’s got all the glamour, thrills, the sights, the scents, the science, the wellness, all natural, all things green and promises the elixir of eternal youth. How do you navigate this? What works, what doesn’t, what’s safe, when do I use it, how do I use it, does it fit with my lifestyle choices, does it have a focus on sustainability?
Depending on what you would like to achieve with your skin and considering your current skin health, this is where an experienced Aesthetician (like myself) can be essential. To help guide you through an effective simple skin health routine and treatment schedule, helping you to avoid the pitfalls of clever marketing over substance and expense over function.
